Sharing a moving van with housemates starts with sharing the information. Each person needs to describe their load, their addresses and any deadline. Only then can you find out whether a combined booking suits the group.
A shared journey may avoid repeated trips between nearby Manchester halls and the same house, but it is not automatically the cheapest option. Extra pickups, different access arrangements and waiting for keys can add work. Ask for a quote based on the complete plan, then compare it with the alternatives available to you.
Choose one booking organiser
Nominate one person to collect everybody’s details and speak to the mover. They do not need to pack anyone else’s room or pay everyone’s share; their job is to keep a single accurate version of the booking.
Use a shared note or spreadsheet with one row per person. Set a deadline for adding belongings. A late addition such as a desk or bike should go back to the mover for confirmation, rather than appearing at the entrance on moving day.
| Person | Collection | Load | Delivery | Constraint |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Housemate A | Hall, block and room | Numbered boxes and suitcases | New house, bedroom 1 | Confirmed checkout time |
| Housemate B | Full address and floor | Boxes plus listed large items | Same house, bedroom 2 | Key collection appointment |
| Housemate C | Full address and floor | Boxes and one fragile item | Storage booked by student | Storage access window |
This is an example booking sheet, not a suggested route. The final collection order should be agreed after the mover has seen the access and timing information.
Check that the deadlines fit together
Start with each accommodation agreement and the instructions sent to the resident. Do not use one housemate’s departure time for everyone else. University halls, private student buildings and ordinary rented houses can have different arrangements.
For example, Unite Students’ checkout guidance gives a before-10am deadline on the final tenancy day. A student in another operator’s building needs that operator’s instructions. For University of Manchester residents, the university’s leaving and moving pages point to the appropriate departure guidance.
If the group’s timetable does not work, split the job. One early storage run and one later delivery may be simpler than expecting three people to wait all day. Our student moves page explains the information needed to enquire about a group booking.
Label for the person and destination
A room number alone is not enough when boxes from several buildings are travelling together. Use a short name and a destination on two sides of each box: “AMINA — NEW HOUSE — BEDROOM 2”, for example. Add a box number and keep the detailed contents in your own list.
For shared possessions, agree ownership before packing. Mark a jointly used kitchen box as shared, and identify who is responsible for checking it arrives. Do not place somebody else’s laptop, passport or keys into a communal bag because there is spare space.
Ask each housemate to photograph their packed load. The pictures help the organiser spot missing items and give the mover a clearer idea of the job. Include objects outside the bedroom, such as a bike, kitchen equipment or anything stored with a friend.
