Loading and Unloading Help in Manchester

Loading and unloading help is labour without our van. You have hired the vehicle, booked a container or rented a storage unit, and you need people who know how to fill it. We bring the hands, the blankets, the straps and a trolley, load it so it travels, and unload it at the other end if you want us there too.

You Bring the Van, We Bring the Crew

Most of the jobs are self-drive moves. Someone has hired a Luton for the weekend to save on a full removal and has realised that the hard part is not the driving, it is getting a three seater down two flights of stairs and a washing machine up a tail lift. Others are containers dropped on a driveway, freight deliveries that arrive on a pallet with nobody to carry them in, and storage units that need filling in a morning.

If it turns out simpler for us to bring the van as well, that is man and van hire, and we will tell you which works out cheaper for the load.

What a Hired Luton Can and Cannot Carry

A Luton is the van most people hire, and it is covered by an ordinary car licence because it is built to sit at 3,500kg. That limit is the whole van, loaded. Northgate's Mercedes Sprinter Luton, for example, has a gross weight of 3,500kg and a payload of 892kg, which is the weight of everything you put in it.

  • Under a tonne of payload goes quickly with books, a solid wood wardrobe and a full fridge freezer.
  • Heavy items go in first, low and against the bulkhead, so the van steers properly.
  • Soft items fill the gaps, so nothing shifts on the Mancunian Way.

There is no clean air charge on top. Greater Manchester's approved Clean Air Plan does not include a charging zone, there are no charges for vans to drive on local roads, and the old zone signs have been taken down. The details are on the Clean Air Greater Manchester FAQs.

A Hired Luton Is Too Long for the Tip

This is the one that catches people at the end of a self-drive move. Greater Manchester's recycling centres do not let in any van over 5.3 metres long or 3.5 tonnes. The Sprinter Luton above is 6,750mm long, so whatever is left over after the move cannot go to the tip in the van you hired for it.

A smaller hire van can go, but it needs a permit: hire vans are included, the van must be under 5.3 metres, and you apply at least two working days before your first visit. The permit is free and allows 18 visits a year. If the leftovers cannot wait two days, a clearance in our van is the quicker route. The rules are on Recycle for Greater Manchester's van permit page.

Loading on a Yellow Line Has to Be Continuous

Manchester allows loading and unloading on many single and double yellow lines, but on its own terms. The council's wording is that you can load or unload for as long as it takes, but the vehicle must be moved immediately after you have finished. Loading is observed, a civil enforcement officer can issue a ticket if it is not reasonable, and the fine is up to £70.

  • The van has to be visibly in use, not parked while everyone has a cup of tea.
  • Residents' bays are off limits unless you hold a valid residents or visitors permit for that zone.
  • Disabled bays cannot be used for loading at all.

That is exactly what a crew buys you on a self-drive move: the van is being loaded the whole time it is there, so it looks like what it is. Where the street will not allow it, reserving parking for the move is the other option.

A Container on the Street Needs a Month

A storage container or a removal pod on the road in Manchester needs the council's permission first. The permit costs £265 for 28 days, made up of a £90 inspection fee and a £175 permit, and you need public liability insurance of at least £10 million and a scale plan of the site. The council says it will contact you within 20 working days, and it will not grant permission after the event.

  • Containers under 3 metres by 2 metres are normally suitable for the highway.
  • Anything over 5 metres by 2 metres needs express approval.
  • It must be guarded by three traffic cones, lit in the dark and marked with the owner's name and phone number.

Stockport is quicker to price but no lighter on cover: £149 for the first seven days and £54 for each seven after, with at least £5 million of public liability insurance. Most people put the container on a drive instead, which needs none of this.

Filling a Storage Unit in One Visit

Storage sites set their own rules, and the ones that matter for loading are hours and parking. Big Yellow's Manchester store on New Elm Road, for example, runs extended access from 5am to 11pm and gives free covered parking while you are on site, but it is clear that you cannot park and go off site. The van is there to be unloaded, not left.

A crew means the unit is filled in one visit rather than three, and stacked so the boxes you need first are at the front. If you want us to do the driving as well, that is a self-storage removal.

How Loading Help Is Priced

Labour-only work is priced on time, and we quote it before the day once we know what is being loaded, how many floors are involved and whether we are needed at both ends. Minimum bookings are typically two to three hours.

Tell us the van size, the floors and the big items, and every rate we work from is published rather than given over the phone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you just load a van I have hired?

Yes. That is the whole service: you hire and drive the van, we load it, and we can unload it at the other end as well if you want us there.

Can I take a hired Luton to the tip in Greater Manchester?

Usually not. The recycling centres do not let in vans over 5.3 metres long or 3.5 tonnes, and a typical Luton such as Northgate's Sprinter is 6,750mm long. A smaller hire van can go with a free permit applied for two working days ahead.

Is there a clean air charge for a hired van in Manchester?

No. Greater Manchester's approved Clean Air Plan does not include a charging zone, and there are no charges for vans driving on local roads.

How long can a van stay on a yellow line while we load?

As long as the loading takes, as long as it is continuous. Manchester's rule is that the vehicle must be moved immediately after loading finishes, loading is observed, and the fine is up to £70.

Do I need permission to put a storage container outside my house?

On the road, yes. Manchester charges £265 for 28 days, needs £10 million of public liability cover and takes up to 20 working days, with no retrospective permission. On your own drive, no.

How much is loading and unloading help?

It is priced on time, with minimum bookings typically two to three hours. We quote before the day once we know the load and the floors.
