Why Households Use Self Storage

Self storage is a bigger part of moving house than most people realise. The Self Storage Association UK's 2026 industry report counts 3,143 stores across the country at 74.5% occupancy, and says 76% of use is by domestic customers, with lack of space at home the main reason given. In Manchester that usually means a house sale, a rental that ends before the next one starts, or a home being emptied so it can be decorated or sold.

When Completion Dates Do Not Line Up

The most common household storage job starts with a house sale. The government's home buying guide explains that the completion date is confirmed at exchange of contracts, often around two to four weeks later, and that keys are often handed over around lunchtime on completion day. It also notes that delays in moving money, which are more common in long chains, can stop you getting into a property when you expected to.

If the sale of your old home completes before the purchase of the new one, everything has to go somewhere in between. Storage fills that gap. Drive-Up Units and Indoor Units

The type of unit changes how long the van spends at the storage site. A drive-up unit is a garage style unit the van can reverse up to, so the load goes straight in. An indoor unit sits inside a building, which means trolleys, corridors and sometimes a lift between the van and the door. Both work, but an indoor unit on an upper floor adds time at each end.

Access hours differ from site to site, and a unit whose gate shuts before the van arrives turns a one visit job into two. Check the hours for the day of your move, and tell us whether the unit is drive-up or indoor when you ask for a quote.

Loading a Unit You Will Need to Get Into

A house going into storage for a few weeks is not the same as a house going into storage for a year. If there is any chance you will need something before the move out, the order the unit is loaded in matters more than how neatly it is packed.

• ✓Seasonal clothes, paperwork and anything you might need go in last, at the front.
• ✓A clear walkway down one side lets you reach the middle without unloading the lot.

Insurance and What a Unit Can Hold

Goods in a storage unit remain your responsibility. The Self Storage Association UK says customers will be required to have insurance cover against loss or damage for the period of storage, and some operators, including Apex, price their units with insurance not included. Check whether the site's own cover suits you before the first leg, not after.

Some things cannot go into storage at all. The association lists firearms, illegal substances, explosives, dangerous weapons and anything harmful to public health. Operators set their own rules on items such as food, so ask the site before packing anything perishable.

Storing Things to Sell a House

Not every storage job is a gap between homes. Some people put part of a house into storage while it is on the market, so rooms look bigger and viewings go more smoothly, and some clear a house before decorating. These jobs are usually smaller, a room or two of furniture and boxes, and they often need a second trip later when the house sells.
