Moving from halls to a shared house in Manchester starts with two questions: when must your room be empty, and when can you actually get into the new property? Solve those before booking transport. A short journey from a hall to Fallowfield, Withington or another student neighbourhood still needs a workable handover at both ends.
The useful distinction is between having an address and having access. An email confirming your tenancy does not tell the mover where to collect the keys, whether somebody must attend an appointment or which bedroom your boxes belong in. Put those details in one shared plan.
Build the day around keys and deadlines
Read your hall’s departure instructions and note the date, checkout time and key-return procedure. Separately, ask the new landlord or agent how and when you will receive the keys. If housemates have different arrangements, choose one person to confirm the final position and share it with everyone.
Manchester Student Homes’ moving-in guidance is a useful starting point for the arrival side of the move. Keep its housing checklist separate from your transport booking: the van needs a confirmed destination and collection window, while you still need to check the property itself.
| Detail | Record before booking |
|---|---|
| Leaving halls | Hall, block, room, final departure time and key return |
| Entering the house | Full address, key collection location and earliest agreed access |
| People | Who will be at each address and their contact numbers |
| Belongings | Boxes, suitcases, furniture and large or fragile items |
| Access | Floor, stairs, lift arrangements and any instructions from the building |
Decide what belongs in the new house
Start with the inventory for your hall room and the furniture list for the house. Supplied desks, mattresses and chairs belong to the accommodation unless you have a clear agreement otherwise. A furniture delivery can also be unnecessary if the new bedroom already has everything you need.
Ask each housemate to list the things they own for shared use. Four people may have four kettles but no vacuum cleaner. Decide which items are coming, who owns them and what happens when somebody moves out later. A quick photograph of the shared list is more useful than trying to remember a conversation at the end of term.
For your own belongings, count packed containers rather than saying “just one room”. Add the awkward extras separately: a clothes airer, a bike, a monitor, a bedside unit or a musical instrument can change how the load needs to be handled.
Choose one group move or separate collections
A shared booking can make sense when your collection addresses and timings fit together. It becomes less straightforward when one person must leave before breakfast, another cannot collect their new keys until late afternoon and a third needs a drop at storage.
Give those constraints to the mover before agreeing the job. Do not decide the collection order purely by drawing the shortest route on a map; permission to enter each building and the loading work also matter. Our Manchester student moving service can be quoted against the actual addresses and load, including a request for several pickups.
If you are leaving University of Manchester accommodation, use the University of Manchester removals guide alongside your hall’s latest instructions. Manchester Met students can start with the Manchester Metropolitan moving page. Neither replaces confirmation from the accommodation team.
