Moving out of Birley starts with a detail that is easy to overlook: which Birley building are you leaving? Give your mover the building name, room details and collection instructions, rather than simply putting “Birley halls” on the booking. That makes it easier to plan the loading, estimate the work and meet your checkout deadline.

This guide covers the move from your student room to a shared house, home or a storage unit you have arranged. For the wider campus area, see our Manchester Metropolitan University removals guide.

Identify your Birley building first

Manchester Met’s current accommodation directory lists Dale, Naylor and Warde as Birley townhouses, with Dunham and Vine as flats. Those names matter when somebody is finding your entrance with a van full of moving equipment.

The university’s Dale and Naylor information describes furnished townhouses arranged over several storeys. Explain which floor your room is on and whether any large possessions need carrying downstairs. A ground-floor collection and a collection from an upstairs bedroom are different jobs, even when the number of boxes is identical.

Copy the address from your accommodation agreement or resident instructions. Check the building entrance with reception before the move. A postal address or campus map pin does not by itself confirm where a removals vehicle may stop.

Book around your checkout deadline

Find the end date and departure time in your own agreement and checkout email. The end of teaching, your final exam and the last day you can occupy the room may be different. If anything is unclear, ask the accommodation team before reserving transport.

Allow time after loading to check your room, deal with any remaining cleaning and complete the key handover. Booking a van for the exact moment you must leave gives you no margin if a box splits or you discover another cupboard of kitchenware.

Our end-of-term moving guide helps organise those last few days. If your schedule allows it, compare moving the day before checkout with doing everything on the final morning.

Give the mover the information that changes the job

Detail to sendWhy it helps
Building, room and floorIdentifies the collection and the amount of carrying.
Boxes, bags and individual large itemsHelps assess the load without guessing from “one room”.
Reception’s loading instructionsEstablishes the permitted approach and any arrangements to make.
Your checkout deadlineAllows the collection to be planned around a real time limit.
Destination and key availabilityChecks that your belongings can actually be delivered.

The university’s Birley page describes limited parking for Blue Badge holders. That is not a removals loading permission. Ask about the appropriate arrangement for your particular building and pass the answer to the mover; do not assume a car park is available to a van.

Pack for the stairs and the next address

Start with books, spare bedding and things you will not use again before leaving. Keep books in smaller boxes so a single carton does not become awkward to lift. Tape the base securely and mark any fragile contents. Use bags for light soft items rather than loose piles that need several extra trips.

Keep your laptop, medication, passport, chargers and travel documents in a bag that stays with you. Label boxes with both your name and their destination if some are going home and others into storage. “Kitchen” alone will not distinguish your box from a flatmate’s.

Leave supplied furniture and equipment in place. Before taking an appliance or pan from the communal kitchen, establish who owns it. Anything bought together needs a decision before loading begins, particularly if you are moving to different houses.

Sharing a move with housemates

A shared collection may be worth pricing when everyone can be packed and ready together. Make one inventory covering all participants and list every delivery address. Agree who will communicate with the mover, who is paying, and what happens if somebody adds furniture or needs a different day.

Ask for the whole job to be assessed. Two people splitting a collection do not automatically pay half of two separate moves: additional stops, waiting and carrying can affect the work. Our student moving service explains what to include when requesting a quote.

If the next house is not ready

Get the date and time for collecting your new keys before deciding you can move straight in. If there is a gap, compare taking things home with booking storage and arranging a second journey.

Frank’s provides transport into and out of student storage; you book the storage space with your chosen provider. Confirm its opening hours, access requirements and acceptance of your belongings before arranging collection from Birley.

Once the plan is settled, send your building, moving date, inventory and destination for a quote. Keep the final room check and key return on your own checklist so that loading the van is followed by a properly completed departure.

GOOD TO KNOW

A few useful answers.

Can I book a move using just the name Birley?

Include Dale, Naylor, Warde, Dunham or Vine, together with your room and floor. Confirm the collection entrance with reception and pass on any loading instructions. The full details make it easier to assess the move and find the correct building.

Can I leave my belongings in Birley over summer?

Check your agreement and ask the accommodation team about any authorised extension or storage arrangement. Do not assume a room or communal area remains available after checkout. If you book external storage, Frank’s can quote for the transport.

Can several Birley students share a van?

Ask for a quote covering everyone’s belongings and every collection or delivery point. A shared booking needs an agreed readiness time and enough space for the combined load; any saving depends on the work involved.

Where can a van load at Birley?

Ask reception about the current arrangement for your exact building. A postal address or parking description does not establish loading permission. Give the mover the confirmed entrance, any restrictions and your floor before the booking is finalised.

Should I take the furniture from my Birley room?

Take furniture and equipment that belong to you, and leave supplied furnishings as required by your accommodation agreement. Check the inventory if ownership is uncertain. List any personal furniture separately in the moving enquiry.
