Changing rooms during the university year can mean a few trips along a corridor or a complete move across Manchester. The practical job depends on where you are going, but the starting point is the same: obtain the university’s approval and a confirmed handover arrangement.
Once that is settled, a room transfer can be planned around lectures, work and the belongings you use every day. Our University of Manchester removals guide covers the wider transport choices; this guide concentrates on moving while your student life is already in progress.
Request the transfer before arranging the move
Use the university’s official room-transfer process. Suitable rooms depend on availability, there is no guaranteed waiting time, and an informal room swap is not permitted. If an offer is made, the university supplies the new room and moving details.
Keep the written confirmation somewhere easy to find. Check the new room type, agreement, charges and dates before accepting. Ask the accommodation team about anything unclear rather than treating a conversation with another student as an approved arrangement.
You can prepare an inventory while waiting, but avoid making a firm collection booking based on an unconfirmed date. If a mover provides an initial estimate, explain that the handover is still provisional and ask how a later booking would work.
Put the two key handovers on one timetable
Find out when you can collect the new key and when the old room must be cleared. Write those times next to your teaching commitments and any work shift. A plan that requires you to receive a delivery while sitting an assessment needs changing before the day arrives.
| Stage | Detail to confirm |
|---|---|
| Approval | The new hall, room and agreed moving date. |
| New room access | Where and when you receive the key. |
| Old room departure | The clearance deadline and key-return process. |
| Transport | Pickup, destination, inventory and carrying help. |
| Study essentials | What must remain with you throughout. |
| Final checks | Room condition, belongings and confirmation that both handovers are complete. |
Ask both residences about access for your belongings. An approved room transfer does not establish where a van can park or whether a particular entrance can be used. Pass any confirmed arrangements to your mover before collection.
Choose help according to the load
For a move within one building, a few safe carrying trips may be enough. Consider whether you have people available to help and whether the route is manageable. Do not overload yourself, block shared routes or borrow equipment without permission.
A move between different sites may suit a student man and van booking. Send a list of boxes, cases and larger items, with the floors and access at both ends. A monitor, bike or musical instrument should appear separately on the list, even if it is the only thing that does not fit into boxes.
Ask what assistance is included and what needs to be ready. If your circumstances mean you cannot carry belongings, make that clear when organising the move so the amount of help can be agreed.
